Earlier this September, our Health Promotion Peer Educators were out in full force spreading the message about the benefits of getting a doctor with the University of Ottawa Health Services (UOHS). In case you haven’t seen this message yet, you’ve procrastinated registering or just simply forgot, here are all the reasons why you should register to get a family doctor today!

1. You get a consistent health care provider on campus. Your family doctor and/or nurse practitioner with UOHS will be easily accessible to you - they will either be at the campus clinic located at 100 Marie Curie Private, or a short walk away at the 316 Rideau Street clinic. Having a family doctor or a nurse practitioner is important as it can allow you to build a relationship with your family health team. Doctors Nova Scotia has reported that a doctor-patient relationship is beneficial to your health as it allows for continuity of care, gives your doctor access to your patient history so they can better understand you as a patient and aids in chronic disease management and mental health support.

2. Shortened wait time. You know how much you dread that wait-time at the campus walk-in clinic during flu season? This can be avoided altogether by getting a family doctor! Instead, you’ll be able to book an appointment with your doctor and skip that line.

3. Access to allied health professionals and mental health services. Besides getting a family doctor, you’ll have access to UOHS’s Family Health Team, with professionals like a dietitian and a physiotherapist, who utilize their expertise to ensure you get the very best specialized care. You also get access to mental health services, such as a psychiatrist and mental health counsellors.

4. Access to special programs. You’ll get to partake in various programs offered at the University of Ottawa Health Services such as the Smoking Cessation program, the Healthy Lifestyles program and more! These take place in individual or group settings and are designed to help you live and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Make sure you register today to take advantage of all these amazing benefits!

Registration with a family doctor at the University of Ottawa is available to all registered students of the university. You are especially encouraged to register if your current family doctor is located over 100 kilometers away. You can register online at uottawa.ca/health or by phone at 613-564-3950.
