Let’s Talk About Sex



Sex can mean different things for all people. Having a conversation about sexual desires and needs in a relationship is important to build a healthy relationship.

Talking about sexual expectations, desires, and needs with your partner should be part of the communication, even if it can be awkward to bring up. Be as straightforward, confident, and honest as you can be.

Scenario 1:


Tim and Sam are watching a movie. Suddenly, a steamy sex scene comes on. This reminds Sam that he has been meaning to ask Tim about trying new things in the bedroom, but he is not sure how to ask Tim about it.

Sam could say:
« I have always wanted to try that. Would you feel comfortable trying it together? »

It is also important to let your partner know what you are comfortable or uncomfortable with.. Setting boundaries is essential.

Scenario 2


Sarah asked Alex if they could try out this new sex position. However, Alex does not feel comfortable with it. How could he address the topic?

Alex could say: « I am not sure if I am comfortable with that. Can we try something else instead? »

Having an open line of communication with your partner is important for any healthy relationship. Here are other examples of how you could approach various topics.
  • «Would you feel comfortable using/doing…?»
  • «I’m interested in trying something nw.Would you be comfortable…?”

Let’s talk about STBBI status
Although it may be difficult, talking to your partner about sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) is an important conversation.

Scenario 3

Carla and Diana met on a dating app a few weeks ago. They have been talking for a couple of weeks now and before taking things to the next level, Carla wants to know if Diana has been tested for STBBIs. However, she isn't sure how to address the topic.

Carla could say :
« Before we take things any further, I want to make sure that we are both being responsible. I decided to go get tested for STBBIs, when was your last test? »
