What is Health Promotion?
Health Promotion (HP) is made up of 2 Health Promotion Specialists, Administrative Assistants, Team Leaders, and Peer Wellness Volunteers who are dedicated to making health information accessible to students and to encourage well-being through healthy choices.
HP’s focus is to empower students during various stages of change for healthy living and academic success by offering free bilingual resources, services, programs, and activities that touch on student health issues.
There are two different types of volunteer positions: peer wellness educators and peer wellness helpers.
- A peer wellness educator provides education materials from credible sources based on the six different health teams.
- A peer wellness helper supports the students more directly using the online live peer wellness chat and the new wellness center.
Our Experience with Health Promotion (HP):
Recruitment Process:
I went to the free yoga classes on Mondays in the 90U Residence, when the HP team had a board up for recruitment. The girls standing near the board had had a positive experience with HP and so I decided to put in my application online with HP. I was one of the few who were able to do my interview in person before the COVID-19 lockdown, and I enjoyed the interview procedure. - Paige
When scrolling through Instagram I came across a post about HP’s recruitment. In the past, I had many positive experiences with health promoters at fairs, in the cafeteria, and at the HP Center. Seeing this amazing team work together encouraged me to apply, and ever since I have had a great experience working on the sexual health team. - Alyssa
Experience:
I have been a peer educator with HP for 2 years now. I was on the Global Health Team last year and I am a part of the Sexual Health Team this year. My experience at HP has been amazing! I have met a bunch of great people and I got the opportunity to work alongside very knowledgeable Healthcare professionals! - Nadine
My experience at HP has been different. This is my first year as a peer educator and due to the pandemic, everything was online. Despite the changing circumstances everyone at HP has been incredible. My team members are amazing collaborators and the team leads and the administrative team have been so supportive throughout the year. - Reese
