How to stay motivated to stay active! - Tips for uOttawa students

The gym closures and intramural cancellations are definitely a bummer, but not to worry! We have some tips for you to keep your motivation to exercise going!

Have your equipment ready

Being in the right attire and having your activity in sight can give you that little push to start your workout! By having your gym clothes prepared for the morning, shoes by the door and your tennis racket by the bedroom door, you will be ready to start your activity!

Do not limit yourself to a workout session at the gym, you can do it in the comfort of your own home

By clicking this link, you can find videos such as yoga, EMOM (and many more) made by our Gee-Gee instructors🐴. If you need more videos, you can subscribe to channels on YouTube such as Fitness Blender (Killer 😵 HIIT workouts) and Yoga with Adriene (has brilliant videos for beginners).

Try something new, for example, pilates!

Adults need at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week but this doesn’t mean you need to do the same old boring workout over and over again! Even if you’re working out the same area/muscle groups, you can switch things up by changing the exercises or the trainer you’re following/using. Here’s an activity you can try and all you need is a mat: pilates! You can find quick 30 minutes videos on YouTube, if you’re not too sure where to start, here is the Blogilates channel. Your muscles will thank you later!

Even if it’s chilly out, don’t be afraid to go outside

To stay active while soaking up the sun and fresh air even when it’s a bit colder outside, follow these tips.
  1. Wearing a lot of thin layers is super useful. You can start off your workout warm and take off or unzip a layer later on if you get too hot without sacrificing too much heat.
  2. Investing in a treaded shoe or shoe cover could be useful to avoid falling when walking or running when sidewalks and paths start to freeze over. If this isn’t for you, try to stick to places that are well plowed and ice free to reduce the risk of an injury.

Stay accountable and make it part of your routine

Dedicating a time slot in your agenda for your workouts may be more motivating than ‘working out when you feel like it’. You can use this time as a study break (by going on a walk with your dog for exemple) or you can even use this time to do some physical activity with a buddy. You can also track your physical activity progress through apps and programs like Fitbit and MyFitnessPal or some people share their personal fitness journey on social media! If these options are not quite for you, you can also track your physical activity progress with a pen and paper.

Some extra tips

  1. Start gradually, then work your way to your goal! Working out like the “Rock” Johnson your first week isn’t super sustainable
  2. Set realistic goals! Having realistic goals and achieving them will make you happier with your progression!
We hope these tips and tricks have inspired you to stay active! Whether it be a commitment to a fitness grind, getting your steps in, or just trying something new, there are many benefits to physical activity. Now it’s up to you to go experience them!
