Fun Summer Activities While Maintaining Physical Distancing

Now that some regions of Ontario are already in Stage 3 of reopening the economy, everyone is super excited to be going out and hanging out with their friends whom they haven’t seen in a few months. However, it is important that we realize that we’re still in a global pandemic and we must do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Below is a list of fun, and safe summer activities that you can do this summer while still protecting yourself and others.

Picnic - An environmentally friendly way to enjoy a lunch out with your roommates and friends, you can prepare the food at home and bring your own plates/ utensils for a more traditional picnic. Below are some locations that are perfect for a lunch outside:

  • Major’s Hill Park
  • Vincent Massey Park
  • Hogs Back Park

Hiking - There are plenty of trails along Ottawa to go for a hike, it is a great exercise and a chance to enjoy nature. Below is a link of great hiking trails near Ottawa and it lists the length and difficulty of the trail perfect for beginners, some include 

Camping - If you want to dive deeper into nature, camping can be a fun way to enjoy a weekend while maintaining physical distancing with your family, roommates and friends, not to mention to iconic camping activities: making s’mores, hiking etc. Below is a list of a few campgrounds near Ottawa:

  • Wesley Clover Parks Campground
  • Ottawa’s Poplar Grove Campground
  • Rideau Heights Campsite 

Farmers Market - A great option to hang out with your friends and prepare a no waste meal with food from the Farmers Market, be sure to go early to avoid the crowds and get the best produce! You can also go to any of these markets before your picnic to get the freshest food is possible! The time is listed on their website below:

Beach - A great way to cool off and can be a great way to social distance. Since beaches are outdoors there is a greater chance to social distance if it’s not a busy day compared to an indoor pool, below are some beaches close to the Ottawa region:

  • Mooney’s Bay Beach
  • Westboro Beach
  • Petrie Island

Drive In - Perfect, if you’re tired of Netflix on your couch, a drive in is a safer option to go out and watch a new movie. The Drive in Experience Ottawa has taken the proper safety measures to open and has new movies waiting for you:

As the community continues its gradual staged approach to reopening, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) encourages you to go about your daily activities while protecting yourself and others. Please follow these recommended precautions and be COVIDWise to help keep COVID-19 under control. 

  • W – Wear a mask or face covering when you are in indoor public spaces and when you cannot maintain a physical distance of two metres (six feet).
  • I – Isolate yourself from others when you are sick (and get tested promptly if you have COVID-like symptoms).
  • S – Stay two metres (six feet) apart from those outside your household.
  • E – Exercise proper hand hygiene; wash your hands regularly or use sanitizer especially before touching your face.
