Blood donation goes far beyond the needles and the blood. Everyone involved can benefit from the gratification of helping someone out through blood donations. The need for blood is constant - every two seconds, someone is in need of blood - and everyone who is eligible can help!

According to the Red Cross, it is estimated that 6.8 million people donate blood every year. The donated blood is separated into three components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. The components of a single donation can save up to three separate people. Additionally, there are four blood types: A, B, AB, and O. People with blood type O negative can donate to all other blood type recipients, that's why it's always in high demand. Blood and platelets cannot be artificially created; they can only come from donors.

In the days before donating blood, it is recommended to eat iron-rich foods, drink extra water and be well rested. On the day of the donation, it is important to remember to wear a shirt with sleeves that can be rolled up, bring a picture ID and a list of the medication you currently take.
